Higher Dose Wegovy® Demonstrates Nearly 28% Weight Loss in Early Responders, According to New Analyses Presented at the European Congress on Obesity

ISTANBUL, Turkey – May 14, 2026 – Novo Nordisk today presented new sub-analyses from the large-scale STEP UP clinical trial at the European Congress on Obesity (ECO), held from 12-15 May. The data reveals that a higher dose of Wegovy® (semaglutide 7.2 mg) is highly effective in achieving significant weight loss, with “early responders” reaching an average of 27.7% weight loss at week 72.

The STEP UP trial involved over 1,400 adults living with obesity without type 2 diabetes. Findings show that participants treated with the 7.2 mg dose reached their weight loss goals faster than those on the 2.4 mg dose. On average, participants on the higher dose lost 21% of their total body weight—equivalent to approximately 23 kg for a trial participant weighing 113 kg—compared to 17.5% for those on the 2.4 mg dose and 2.4% for the placebo group.

Key Highlights from the STEP UP Sub-Analysis:

  • Exceptional Results for Early Responders: Participants who lost 15% or more of their body weight within the first 24 weeks (early responders) achieved a mean weight loss of 27.7% by week 72 on the 7.2 mg dose.
  • Targeted Fat Loss: A separate sub-analysis demonstrated that 84% of the weight loss with Wegovy® (both 2.4 mg and 7.2 mg) was attributed to reductions in fat mass.
  • Preserved Muscle Health: While fat mass was significantly reduced, participants preserved muscle function and improved muscle health. MRI data showed a reduction in abdominal visceral fat by over 30%, while functional muscle strength remained consistent with placebo groups.

“Obesity is a chronic disease that demands lifelong, holistic treatment,” said Dr. Dror Dicker, Associate Clinical Professor at Tel-Aviv University. “These new insights help healthcare professionals manage expectations and set meaningful goals with patients, showing that even those without an ‘early’ response still experience substantial clinical benefits.”

Emil Kongshøj Larsen, Executive Vice President at Novo Nordisk, added: “These studies show that weight loss with Wegovy® is predominantly driven by reductions in fat, while muscle function is preserved. This is great news for people living with obesity who are focused on healthy body composition.”

The results regarding improved body composition have been submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
